The Wisdom Of Elders: Insights From The New Podcast “70 Over 70”

Now that you’re likely heading outside on a regular basis, and perhaps looking for your next good podcast as you hit the trails or walk on the local track, you’re in luck. While we’ve previously recommended several podcasts for you to consider, just this week there’s been a new entry to the genre of “podcasts about aging” that’s garnered significant press and promises to be an engaging and enlightening listen. Called “70 Over 70” the podcast is the brainchild of Max Linsky, a 40-year-old writer and pioneering podcaster who became well known for his creation of Longform, a website and podcast originally highlighting non-fiction writers and later broadening to include fiction writers. Linsky went on to create Pineapple Street Studios, which has developed many highly praised podcasts including the now much-heralded “70 Over 70.”
Begun as a way to engage his well-known father, Harvard Professor Marty Linsky, in conversation after a series of serious health problems for Marty, the program has gone on to interview some of the most notable and interesting 70+ year-olds around. Among the guests to be featured on the weekly podcast will be Dan Rather, Norman Lear, Alice Waters, James Clyburn, Maira Kalman, Madeline Albright, and Sister Helen Prejean. While the name suggests there will be a total of 70 interviews, in fact, Linsky has no definitive endpoint and plans to include on every show interviews with “non-famous” over 70s who may have interesting stories to tell or wisdom to impart. In fact, if you would like to nominate yourself or someone you know to be included in this podcast, you are invited to email the show at [email protected] or call 302-659-7070 and leave a message with your name, age, where you’re from, and what you’d like to talk about on the show.
Word of advice, however. This is not a platform to review your biography so much as an opportunity to discuss “meaning of life stuff.” The goal is to engage the guests- the famous and the not-so-famous- in conversation about their life in the present. What matters in life? How do you stay resilient? How do you make sense of death and what comes next? As Linsky has suggested, he’s encouraging these famous seniors to deliver some “wisdom bombs.” So far, a few episodes have been released and he reports that emerging themes include the need to be fully present in the moment and the feeling of little fear about dying. So strap on your headphones and give a listen here. And to hear an interview with Max Linsky about the origins and focus of the podcast, click here. Finally, if you’ve got room for one more podcast on your playlist, you may also want to check out another new podcast entitled, “Women Over 70.” While there are fewer famous women on this show, it does feature accomplished, professional women over 70 who have inspiring stories to share.
