The End Of Trends? Fashion And Its Relevance Today
The End Of Trends? Fashion And Its Relevance Today
August 19, 2020
For many, late summer often signifies the excitement of the coming fall- new movies, new performances, new television shows, even new fashion trends. But as with much else, this year is different. In fact, it’s relevant to ask whether fashion trends even have meaning anymore. With “Fashion Week” canceled around the world, and clothing sales down dramatically this year (reports are that in April clothing sales nosedived an astonishing 70% from the previous year), along with the bankruptcies of major retailers, consumers may be losing interest in trendy clothing. Indeed, a recent New Yorker article described the “slob-chic style” of the pandemic, along with suggestions for where to purchase pajamas, sweatpants, slippers, and other clothing items of comfort.
If, however, you refuse to back down from following the trends, or are just looking for a fun diversion from all the chaos, lists still abound regarding what’s being promoted for the Fall of 2020. For example, the website Bustle recently described the “grandma” trend of tapestry and patchwork clothing that you’re likely to see in stores or (more likely) online in the coming months. And speaking of online shopping, check out these 30 best online clothing stores for every budget and style, as well as these 3 affordable online retailers recommended for women over 60.
But perhaps the most compelling trend for clothing this fall will be all about the pandemic (can’t seem to get away from it). Perhaps capitalizing on consumer anxiety, the latest trend in pandemic products is the introduction of anti-viral coating on items of clothing. Those who want the ultimate in protection may now opt not only for masks but also for denim and other items that marry fashion and function and vow to keep you safer (though there are no known cases of transmission of the virus from cloth to consumer). Is this a scam or just another safety precaution? No one really knows for sure but one fashion-conscious queen seems to have taken up the cause: Apparently Queen Elizabeth now wears cotton gloves that are covered with this protecting coating.
