Despite the pandemic, we are fortunate that good content keeps coming to distract us. From new shows to new (and newly discovered) books, there’s surely something to catch your attention and engage your mind. So, without further ado, dive into the following:
For movie lovers:
-There are several engaging documentaries you should investigate: First, check out the trailer for “Diana Kennedy: Nothing Fancy” a fascinating look into the life of this great 97-year-old English doyenne of Mexican food, which will start streaming on Amazon Prime in late May; or what about “Crip Camp,” the Netflix documentary now streaming that explores the birth of the disability rights movement through an innovative summer camp program; or finally, The Royal Academy of Art in London is streaming for free “Exhibition on Screen: Painting The Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse.”
-With time on your hands, consider The Washington Post’s list of best long movies to stream, or take in Insider’s 17 Best Sci-Fi movies now playing on Netflix.
-Or, if short films are your thing, consider the Short Film A Day To Keep Anxiety Away on the Tribeca Film Festival website;
-For more general streaming recommendations, take a look at The Daily Beast’s list of new items on Netflix, HBO, Hulu and Amazon For May, or check out Fast Company’s Pop-Culture “musts” for May, including a brand new Jerry Seinfeld Special: 23 Hours To Kill, now streaming on Netflix.
For other forms of distraction:
-If you’re interested in online learning, Coursera is making available 3800 classes free online for unemployed workers;
-If books are your preferred distraction, there are several more lists to consider: First, Alyson Walsh of the website That’s Not My Age has a list of 25 fiction and non-fiction books to get you through quarantine and beyond; or the website Inside Hook has a definitive list of the 7 new books you need to be reading this month; And if you’re looking for the perfect Mother’s Day Gift (or want to gift yourself something lovely) consider the new book ideas from the website SheKnows;
-Finally, for something special (as well as a fundraiser for a good cause) consider purchasing a $10 ticket to watch a performance of Love, Loss and What I Wore, by Nora Ephron, now streaming on the 92nd Street Y’s website.
