Still In Love: Lessons From Older Couples
Still In Love: Lessons From Older Couples
October 31, 2018
While you may be tempted to call them “cute,” it’s likely older couples in long-lasting marriages have worked long and hard to sustain and maintain their relationships- and being cute has had nothing to do with it. Recent statistics suggest that 40-50% of all US marriages end in divorce and only a small, special subset (perhaps 6% of all marriages) make it to 50 years or more.
So how do they do it? What’s the secret to a marriage of 50 years or even more? Writer Sarah Muoio recently published a piece entitled, 21 Marriage Lessons From My Still-in-Love 80-Year-Old Grandparents, (scroll through the slideshow) in which she doles out such advice as be good at forgiving and make sure to kiss each other goodnight every night. Some of it’s simple and intuitive and some of it’s more challenging (i.e., do you hold yourself accountable to your partner when you make mistakes?). Overall, it’s important advice for anyone committed to the long haul. And speaking of long relationships, you also need to look at the new book from Ari Seth Cohen due out in December called Advanced Love. The book uses photography and words to tell the stories of 40 inspiring couples who share the secrets and wisdom of their decades-long partnerships. To learn more about the couples, check out the clips of these seniors still in love, along with other videos about stylish seniors, here.
