Out Of This World: Thinking About Future Travel Plans
Out Of This World: Thinking About Future Travel Plans
April 15, 2020
Chances are you, or someone you know has had to cancel upcoming travel plans due to the worldwide spread of the coronavirus. If you’re healthy and safe, that’s perhaps not such a terrible ordeal but rather a disappointment and maybe inconvenience. But many of us who are at a later stage of life have looked forward to the traveling we couldn’t do earlier in our lives or to just finally see the rest of the world and all its wonder. And now the question is, will you be able to travel again when the effects of the pandemic have faded, and what will travel be like in the future?
No one has a crystal ball, but travel experts are anticipating that robust travel will once again arise when the risk of infection has receded or at least become manageable and when attractions begin to open again. While travel plans may become more modest or limited going forward (maybe more domestic travel and shorter stays), there may also be fewer options, as some travel businesses (say cruise lines or smaller airlines) may not survive the pandemic loss of business. Some travel experts are recommending that now is the time to be out looking for great deals and value for your travel dollars. Given that airline travel has dropped off 95%, there may be great deals to be had on future flights and hotel reservations, especially as pent-up demand may mean a booking surge once we can all move about again. The key is understanding the change and cancellation policies now in effect, to make sure you won’t be out of luck should you need to alter your plans in the future. And in a bit of a futuristic forecast, Fast Company anticipates that travel will become more automated and driven by artificial intelligence (and surveillance) as planners look for less physical contact, fewer queues and compulsive cleaning for transportation and attractions.
