On Your Mind: Updates And Resources About The Benefits Of Mindfulness
April 8, 2020
It wasn’t very long ago (though pre-coronavirus) that we at agebuzz touted the benefits of mindfulness for stress reduction and even potentially lowering your blood pressure. Since then, new research has been published out of Flinders University in Australia that underscores both the protective and restorative benefits of mindfulness as a way to cope with changes that arise as we age. The researchers found that expressions of mindfulness (such as focusing on the here and now, being non-judgmental about what comes your way and recognizing that whatever you’re currently going through is transient and will likely change) may naturally develop as we enter our later years, having acquired valuable insights and experiences along the way. To find out more about how we become more naturally mindful with age, clear your mind and read here.
And given current circumstances, more mindfulness may be just what we all need to come out of this pandemic intact and able to move on. Fortunately, new resources and assistance continue to be available to aid in your pursuit of a mindfulness practice. A recent post from KQED in San Francisco provides links to several sources of valuable mindfulness apps to help you cope with pandemic anxiety, and the website and app Headspace has meditation and mindfulness exercises designed to de-stress you. They’ve even partnered with New York State to make available, free-of-charge, meditation programs designed as a mindfulness and mental health resource for whoever finds that valuable. While this collaboration is aimed at New Yorkers, it’s available to anyone in need.
Finally, perhaps just in time, there’s a new movie being released to enlighten you about the value of mindfulness. Entitled The Mindfulness Movement, the film will be available for rent and streaming on Friday, April 10th, and will give you insights about the growing acceptance and recognized health benefits of mindfulness. You’ll hear from physicians, political and thought leaders and celebrities who have all come to recognize the place of mindfulness in their own lives.
