Off The Shelf: Grab These Titles For Your Summer Reading Pleasure
Off The Shelf: Grab These Titles For Your Summer Reading Pleasure
June 7, 2023
With Father’s Day around the corner, and Memorial Day behind us, many may have visions of relaxing in the hammock or sitting on the beach and diving into some new reads. There are loads of reading lists just out for your summer reading pleasure, some with breezy fiction titles, others with deep dives into more serious matters. To each his own, but here are some of the lists you may enjoy:
From Parnassus Books in Nashville (the bookstore owned by celebrated author Ann Patchett): A mix of historical fiction, mystery, romance, sci-fi, nonfiction, and some recent fiction, and, we might add, the latest book from Ann Patchett herself, Tom Lake, which debuts on August 1.
From The Washington Post: A list of 23 books to read this summer, including new works by Abraham Verghese and Curtis Sittenfeld. The Post separately recommends a list of more serious books and titles on this list include Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf (why are so many recommending this as a summer read?) and Camus’s The Stranger.
From The Atlantic: The Atlantic editors suggest selections for a variety of summer moods, including travel to far-off places, deep dives into a single topic, or even some old favorites (also including Mrs. Dalloway again!) Or, from NPR, a sizzling summer list of new reads set out by the date of publication.
Marketwatch: Marketwatch has put together a terrific list of books for your reading pleasure on how you can age better, including The Third Act: Reinventing Your Next Chapter by Josh Sapan and Life In Transitions By Bruce Feiler.
And speaking about books addressing aspects of aging, we have a few of our own recommendations you may want to toss in your beach bag this summer:
Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity, Rethinking Medicine to Live Better Longer by Dr. Peter Attia. One of the newest best sellers on living a long and healthy life, Dr. Attia’s book has garnered a lot of buzz and attention as he puts forth his recommendations and strategies for living a longer, healthier life. The book has generated many interviews with Attia, including from The New York Times, Maria Shriver Media, and The Free Press. Clearly, it’s one we’ll be talking about for a long time.
The Well-Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor’s Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age by Dr. Gladys McGarey, the physician considered the “mother of holistic medicine.” A centenarian who still practices medicine, she clearly has lessons to share, including how she reimagined her life after an unexpected divorce at age 70 from her husband of many decades. You can read more of her wisdom and secrets in this interview with her from The Guardian and this interview with her from Fortune.
The Book Of Charlie by David Von Drehle– A columnist for the Washington Post, Von Drehle moved to the midwest and befriended a new neighbor who happened to be over 100 years old. In hours spent together, Von Drehle learned the story of Charlie White, a man who witnessed the dramatic life changes of the 20th and 21st centuries and whose life story represents all that has taken place in American history over the last century. You can watch Von Drehle discuss this remarkable friendship here and read the lessons he learned from Charlie White here.
A Happy Reading Summer To You All!
