No Obstacles: Parkour As A New Approach To Exercise
No Obstacles: Parkour As A New Approach To Exercise
July 10, 2019
It may feel like a broken record, but it’s one you need to keep hearing: Exercise is a critical component for healthier aging and a longer life, and no matter your previous track record, exercising into your later years can make a real difference. New research out from the University of Cambridge once again makes this clear. Scientists from the UK found that those with higher levels of physical activity, regardless of previous levels of exercise or medical conditions, have a lower risk of death. Lesson learned? It’s never too late to start moving and it’s critical that you keep moving.
But some of us are just not motivated by the usual work-out routines or can’t imagine a fun way to get (and keep) moving. If that sounds like you, then take a look at Parkour, an approach to movement and stretching that has its roots in French military obstacle training and that has now been adapted for indoor and outdoor settings, in the city or park, that will have you swinging, jumping, rolling or climbing as you once did as a child. And think you’re too old or not athletic enough to participate? Take a look at this beginner’s guide, which includes advice on finding a “parkour community” in your area. Or, perhaps more powerfully, watch this documentary on the value of Parkour in the lives of older participants, or take a look at this recent NBC news video on the benefits of Parkour in lowering your risk of a damaging fall.
