If you’re in the process of planning that summer getaway or strategizing about a staycation, then you’re likely looking for some good reading material- and lucky for you, there are some new titles that seem worthy of your time and attention.
First up, for self-improvement: You may not know about bloggers Susan Saunders and Annabel Streets, but they know a lot about you- or at least, about what you’re going through as you get older. The two friends have spent the last several years researching and writing under the guise of The Age-Well Project, their blog and website that deep-dives into how to keep yourself well and healthy as you age. They recently published a piece in The Guardian describing 25 ways to live well into old age, and for more, you should check out their just-published book, The Age-Well Project: 50 Ways To Live Better and Longer.
If you’d prefer a memoir, you probably can’t do better than the just-published book Ladysitting: My Year With Nana at the End of her Century by Lorene Cary. A Philadelphia native and teacher of Creative Writing at The University of Pennsylvania, Cary has written a beautiful, honest and hilarious memoir about caring for her ailing grandmother in her final year of life. You can listen to a recent NPR interview with Cary about life with her grandmother and writing the book here.
Finally, if your taste veers toward the more profane and avant-garde, you may want to pick up the most recent book from writer and director John Waters, entitled, Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder. If you’re familiar with such films as Pink Flamingos or Hairspray, you’re likely to understand both the cult status and outrageous thoughts that come from John Waters. You can find out more about the flamboyant Mr. Waters by listening to his recent interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air here. Or, read about his unusual art collection as recently profiled in The New York Times.
