More To Discover: Delightful Distractions Part 2
April 15, 2020
Last week’s newsletter contained a list of what we’re calling “Delightful Distractions,” as a way to engage your mind and keep your eyes off the news. Given that we still find ourselves in quarantine, we decided to continue the list this week with new avenues for distraction. So, for your viewing pleasure and intellectual engagement, consider the following:
–For those of you who are movie fans:
-The Washington Post recommends six movies currently streaming for free or for a modest cost;
-If that list seems too paltry, check out the list of 83 of the best movies currently on Amazon Prime from The New Yorker’s film critic Richard Brody;
–If you’d prefer a dance performance rather than a movie, click here to watch a performance from the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater;
–Speaking of performances, take a look at the cast from Hamilton paying tribute to the anniversary of the award-winning show, A Chorus Line;
–What about musical performances? First, take note that on Saturday, April 18th there will be a live performance on ABC, CBS & NBC of a global concert featuring such singers as Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder; Or, if you’re looking for something a little more low-key, check out this pandemic playlist for whatever mood you’re currently experiencing, from The Atlantic; And if you’re a Beatles fan, take a spin at this quiz to test your Beatles trivia.
–Did you know that the world-famous 92nd Street Y in New York City has a reservoir of archived conversations, lectures, and performances for you to watch?
–If you’re looking for something to engage your mind, how about a citizen science project from the Smithsonian, such as volunteering to transcribe the notebooks of astronaut Sally Ride?
–For your reading pleasure, next time you’re sitting on the toilet, take a look at this National Geographic article on what people did before the advent of toilet paper;
–For a different kind of immersive experience, consider:
-A virtual visit to The Tenement Museum in New York City; or
-An online-experience with an Airbnb host from around the world?
