If you’ve ever watched a modern dance performance, you’ve likely seen the vision and influence of choreographer Twyla Tharp at play. An award-winning, internationally renowned dancer and choreographer, Tharp has had a decades-long influence on modern dance. She’s also written brilliant books on topics such as creativity and collaborated with such international stars as Billy Joel and Mikhail Baryshnikov. So when Twyla Tharp talks and gives advice, smart people listen.
And now she’s written a book that we all need to pay attention to. Entitled, Keep It Moving: Lessons For The Rest Of Your Life, Tharp takes her lifelong passion for dance and movement and repurposes it for lessons to be applied to everyone’s aging body and mind. She includes lots of home-based exercises and movements along with a philosophy that aging is not the enemy, stagnation is. So stand up straight, walk with a purposeful stride and read more about Tharp’s new book (along with video of her movements) in this recent New York Times profile. You can also watch a new PBS interview with Tharp here. And finally, read The Head Butler’s glowing review of the new book here, along with a promotional video for the book and a distillation of her 10 most important nuggets of advice. Clearly, since she’s still dancing and choreographing at age 78, she’s got some good advice for us all.
