In Fashion: Fashion Tips From Stylish Older Women
September 28, 2022
While it’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of scrolling social media, it’s also fun to be exposed to the constantly expanding list of “influencers” who have put themselves and their fashion philosophies on display, for literally all the world to see and critique. That takes a lot of gumption and a lot of confidence, especially if you’re an older woman whose presence in society is not always embraced. But some women have determined that a woman’s place is anywhere she wants it to be, and along with that, dress any way they feel comfortable, confident, and carefree. So let’s take a look at some recent “finds” when it comes to more mature fashion influencers and their recommendations.
First up is a recent post on BuzzFeed, entitled, Older Women Are The Only Aspirational Lifestyle Influencers I Want Now. While clearly written from the perspective of a younger admirer, the writer describes the older women she “follows” as “glamorous women with their shit together who have found a niche with younger TikTok audiences.” One influencer, in particular, is noteworthy: 61-year-old Gym Tan (who posts on TikTok under the name “California is too casual”) is a retired fashion executive who’s clearly got her style and confidence front and center, and whose life and fashion philosophy can be summed up by, “I haven’t decided what my purpose is, but I also feel that I want to impart what I’ve learned.”
Recently, the website In The Groove featured five “older” influencers (including Gym Tan again!) who spill the beans on their favorite items for their fall wardrobes. Moving to a more international realm, the website That’s Not My Age posted its own list of “Five of this year’s most-stylish women over-50,” who not only have a great sense of style and wonderful Instagram profiles but are also women of substance and creativity whose style is not the only reason they are noteworthy. Finally, you may want to follow the doings of 74-year-old Linda Rodin, a long-time fashion insider with over 300,000 followers on Instagram. Recently profiled in Ageist, Ms. Rodin is a perfect example of a woman who knows who she is, and what she wants (and wants to wear) at this stage of life and is not afraid to go forward while also learning from the past. In fact, she’s about to launch her own capsule collection of denim clothing, which you can find here.
And speaking of clothes to wear and recommend, That’s Not My Age also recently featured a post about wearing bright colors as an older woman. With the title Older and Bolder, the post highlights the colorful fashions to be found on the website Lisou. Or, you might want to consider the recommendation of 75-year-old model Carolyn Doelling who recommends your wardrobe “pop” with color, and who touts the clothing of designer Mara Hoffman as some of her favorites. You can read an interview with Ms. Doelling, and find out her fashion tips, here. Finally, if you’re confused about where you should shop, take a look at this recent post from The List, which offers clothing suggestions based on your age. Or- maybe not- shop wherever you want, wear whatever you want and do your own thing, in fashion and in life.
