If you’re a Baby Boomer, you’re probably intimately familiar with the lyrics and songs of singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. Born in 1943 in Alberta, Canada (and about to turn 76 on Nov 7th), Mitchell overcame polio and giving up a child for adoption at a young age, to go on to have a spectacular musical career spanning the realms of folk, pop, rock, and jazz- a career which continues to be heralded and influential. In fact, the musician Brandi Carlile recently performed a sold-out live concert of the complete Mitchell album Blue at Disney Hall in Los Angeles. You can read about this much-lauded concert and watch a tribute to Joni Mitchell from Hollywood luminaries and other musicians here.
Mitchell is also in the zeitgeist right now with the publication of her new book, Morning Glory on the Vine: Early Songs and Drawings. A poet as much as a musician, Mitchell paired her lyrics with self-made drawings in a book that was originally published in the early 70s for a limited audience. We are now fortunate to have access to this early work. To find out more about the history of this volume and the earlier life of Mitchell, pull out your acoustic guitar and read here.
But the best way to experience (and perhaps relive) the magic of a Joni Mitchell song is to hear the words and her voice in tandem. Luckily Pitchfork has put together a definitive tribute to Mitchell with a collection of video/audio recordings of 33 of her most iconic songs. So put on your headphones and reminisce here. And for some additional Joni insights, watch this PBS interview with Mitchell’s biographer here.
