Heavy Lifting: The Challenge of Obesity As You Get Older

There’s no denying it- the numbers are just too stark. Americans are not getting any taller, but we’re definitely getting heavier, and this has serious implications for our health, especially as we get older. In 1976 approximately 15% of Americans were categorized as obese– that figure is now close to 40%. So what does that mean for us?
The research literature is now full of studies showing an association between obesity and such health concerns as increased risk of dementia, cancer, hearing loss, and a generally shorter lifespan. And to date, there are really few tried and true measures to help us lose, and keep off, significant weight gain, except for bariatric surgery, which has its own challenges and pitfalls.
While we wait for science to find that magic pill to help us all maintain a healthy weight, we need to do the best we can to watch our calories, stay active and be aware of the triggers that may be causing weight gain.
