May 13, 2020
Like most of us, you’re probably spending a lot more time in front of a screen these days to help pass the time during this pandemic. And even though it’s recommended that we don’t sit or watch too much, all signs suggest that Americans continue to be watching- especially (but perhaps not surprisingly) news and drama. Television viewing seems to be up by 9 hours/week and streaming of content from the internet has increased by 35% during the pandemic. So what are we watching and streaming? Some of it may be “garbage,” but many of us are still finding quality content to keep us engaged. For some new suggestions, consider the following:
-On Television: The New Yorker has a new list of the best television shows to be streaming right now; or check out the new National Geographic documentary on Jane Goodall now streaming; if you’re a sports fan missing your games, consider watching South Korean baseball which will be starting up on ESPN; and for pure delight, take in a 1940s musical, according to a new list of streaming options now posted on The New York Times.
–Movie Options Available: If life isn’t getting you down too much, Vogue put out a list of 17 sad movies that will give you a good cry; On the flip side, get ready to be amazed and exhilarated when the movie of the musical Hamilton makes its way to Disney Plus on July 3rd.
–Museum or Architecture Tours: New York’s Guggenheim Museum provides virtual guided museum tours several days a week, that require a pre-scheduled appointment; And consider this online tour of Milan’s famous La Scala Opera House from Google Arts and Culture;
–Theater: If you haven’t seen actor Simon McBurney’s riveting performance in the multimedia production of The Encounter, now is your chance, as Brooklyn’s St. Anne’s Warehouse will be running free streaming of the show for one week starting May 15th;
–Crafts: Tired of doing puzzles? Check out these 11 craft kits for adults;
–Books, Books, and More Books: Load up your Kindle with some of these recommendations: Writer Anne Patchett owns Parnassus Books in Nashville and has a new list of book recommendations; or check out one of these new Pulitzer Prize-winning books; The Guardian just put out a list of the 10 best novels set in Spain; and The New York Times has their own new list of recommended books; Finally, while you may not be able to change your world, check out The Washington Post’s list of 12 novels that did change our world.
