So how much junk food have you consumed during the pandemic? No reason to feel guilty- stressful circumstances often lead to changes in eating behaviors and can even start you on a vicious cycle of negative mental health repercussions, which could lead to even more poor food choices. So it’s important to understand that better food selections can not only lead to a better frame of mind but will also put you on a path toward healthier aging. And the growing consensus seems to be that a largely plant-based diet is the best path forward.
A new study published in JAMA found that substituting plant-based proteins for meat proteins led to significant benefits. In particular, by using plant-based proteins such as legumes or soy, you’re likely reducing your risk of death from heart disease by a significant amount. More broadly, another report just published in the American College of Nutrition Journal urged the adoption of a plant-based diet worldwide to address some of the global burden looming from aging populations in all countries. It’s suggested that such a shift in eating patterns across the world could reduce the costs and health burdens of aging populations by up to 50% from such diseases as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. In fact, another recent study of the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet found that doubling down on your fruits and veggies can significantly improve your cardiac health in as little as 8 weeks. So, for some suggestions on how to get more plants onto your plate, pull out your saute pan and click here. And take a look at these recommendations from Harvard Health about how to stock your pantry (and fridge) for a more plant-based approach to eating.
One word of caution: There is some concern that in order to support and sustain aging muscles, you’ll need to ramp up your protein intake if the sources are plant-based rather than meat-based. It’s not a reason not to shift your diet, but it is a good reminder to always know the nutritional content of what you eat, regardless of the source.
