Fashion Forecast: What Women In The Know Are Wearing This Winter
January 13, 2021
It’s the middle of winter in the middle of a pandemic. Does it really matter what you wear at this point? For many of us, the urge to surrender to comfort and low-key came early in the pandemic. Or, as Alyson Walsh from That’s Not My Age has made clear, “The elasticized waist is having a fashion moment.” With the desire to stick with “feel-good” clothes and the absence of reasons to dress in glitz and glamour, Walsh suggests that you go for comfort rather than constriction. And as for embracing the winter weather? She suggests nothing beats the winter blues better than a “blanket coat” or what she calls “a duvet coat.” It’s as though heading outside requires little more than grabbing the down blanket that’s spread out on your bed!
Comfort and confidence are also the goal for fashion-forward Parisian (by way of Texas) Linda Wright. As famous for her low-key but luxurious approach to dressing (no make-up but lots of cashmere) as she is for her dreamy Instagram romps through Paris (who wouldn’t want to be wandering in The Tuileries right now!), the 72-year-old Wright has lived in Paris since 1978 and owns the highly-regarded Crimson Boutique, opened in 1984 and dressing both women and men in sumptuous cashmere clothing, including her innovative and universally beloved cashmere poncho. Talk about warmth, comfort, and style all in one piece!
Another “Ms. Wright” you may want to follow is Susie Wright, the former Nordstrom buyer who, at 55, now runs her own style business and regularly doles out fashion advice for older women. In a recent interview with Who What Wear, Susie recommended several trends for both comfort and style heading into 2021. Among the top recommendations? Knits, knits, and more knits, along with an item called “the shacket” which turns out to be a combo shirt and jacket meant to be roomy and warm yet style conscious as well.
Finally, for your fix on new fashion trends as well as the stylish older women who can carry them off, take a look at this recent Who What Wear post, that includes the aforementioned Alyson Walsh and Susie Wright- you’ll be inspired by their choices while pleased with the comfortable items that they’re wearing: low-key comfort dressing that will nonetheless get you out of your winter doldrums.
