Fall Fashions: Standing Stylish This Fall
Fall Fashions: Standing Stylish This Fall
September 25, 2024
As you put away your summer outfits and sort through your fall and winter clothing options, the question arises: Do you need (or want) any new purchases? Does your wardrobe need refreshing? A few tweaks to update your look, perhaps? Maybe pick yourself up out of your fashion rut and point yourself in a slightly more current direction? Well, the fashion commentators and influencers are out with several suggestions if you have the room (and budget) to add to your closet.
First, consider a recent article in The Telegraph recommending some autumn tweaks for the wardrobes of older women. As the article makes clear, you don’t need to think about a complete fashion overhaul but rather loosen up some of the rules that may have previously restricted your options, and open yourself up to a few new select items. These could include colors that exist in your summer wardrobe but you may have resisted for fall, sweaters that may tweak the neckline or texture from what’s already in your closet, or a few well-chosen accessories that refresh what you usually wear. The Wall Street Journal also recently jumped on board the fashion train for older women, recommending stylish substitutes for what may be your old work wardrobe still hanging in your closet. What kind of styles are recommended? Once again, vibrant colors are suggested rather than the more sedate and typical fall neutrals, along with some stand-out costume jewelry, lug-sole shoes (the thick rubber sole will give your foot more stability), and wide-leg pants, something that’s on many fall fashion lists, and which are quite forgiving for fuller and softer older bodies. Finally, Pure Wow echoed many of these same recommendations in its recent list of fashion trends for women over 50, declaring the benefits of wide-leg pants, the value of pops of color standing out in your fall palette (they especially espouse red), and lots of long vests, skirts, and even leather wraps.
If you’re looking for some new fashion influencers to follow online who reflect the aspirations of stylish older women, a recent article in Elle UK has a list for you. Among the featured fashionistas? Grece Ghanem, a regular at many of the fall fashion shows, Dr. Qin Huilan (who often mixes designer duds with her son’s menswear items), and Mette Sørrig, a stylish older woman from Copenhagen, who mixes bright colors with loud patterns and interesting textures. And one other stylish influencer you may have missed: Prue Leith, the well-known judge on The Great British Bake Off, who is known for her fun glasses and brightly colored outfits. She pulled off quite another look, however, during the fall fashion shows in London last week, with a skin-tight leather outfit, spiky hair, red lips, and black eye makeup. Not her usual look, for sure! But Prue proved that older women can have fun with fashion and experiment outside of their style ruts! No soggy bottom on Prue in that outfit!
Finally, as an older woman interested in fashion, you may have struggled over the years to figure out exactly what is “your style.” If you think fashion insiders have it easier, then think again. Recently 67-year-old Cathy Horyn, who for years was the fashion critic for The New York Times and is now a fashion critic-at-large for New York Magazine, described her own journey over the decades to figure out what her style is and to finally be comfortable and confident with her look.
