Easy And Breezy: Have You Adapted The “Coastal Grandmother” Look?
Easy And Breezy: Have You Adapted The “Coastal Grandmother” Look?
May 11, 2022
How many of you daydream about vacation or better yet retirement on a sunny deck overlooking the ocean, coffee (or chardonnay) in hand, perhaps the latest best-selling hard copy book (no Kindle for you) sitting in your lap over an ivory cashmere throw you’re using to keep your legs warm? Or maybe you picture yourself leaving a local farmer’s market, gorgeous “Ina Garten worthy” veggies spilling out of your cotton tote, realizing you can get the fresh basil you need from your own garden? It’s a fantasy for most of us, for sure, something right out of one of those Nancy Meyers movies, like It’s Complicated or Something’s Gotta Give. But it’s a fantasy that doesn’t require a younger or rail-thin you- in fact, in these 2 movies, Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton showcase what it’s like to be a modern, mature woman who is comfortable in her own skin with a sense of elegant, non-fussy style. And it’s that style that’s now sweeping social media.
Known as the “coastal grandmother” look, it was first presented to the world by Tik Tok influencer Lex Nicoleta. Every media outfit from the Wall Street Journal to Refinery 29 is now featuring the coastal grandmother phenomenon. While there are many versions of this style, it all boils down to as much a mindset and lifestyle as it does your fashion choices. The image? Basic, classic clothing (think khaki pants and white turtlenecks) perhaps upgraded to a luxury level even though they could have easily come from The Gap. Accompanied by a mindset that says “stop and smell the roses” (especially if they come from your own garden), this attitude oozes a sense of calm and comfort. And while you don’t actually need to be a grandmother (or a grandmother’s age), the relaxed, breezy clothing that exemplifies the style is certainly attractive to those of us of “a certain age.” New York Magazine’s The Cut describes the style: “There is no minimum age, and you needn’t have any grandchildren, or kids of your own for that matter. It’s ok if you live in a landlocked state and have never touched the ocean in your life because coastal grandmother is less a rigid style of fashion and more a feeling.”
If you don’t own a beach house or have never been to a farmer’s market, you can still dress the part. Refinery 29 says the coastal grandmother look (which by the way has now been viewed on Tik Tok over 7 million times) is “the ultimate aesthetic we’ve all dreamed of having when those retirement savings accounts start rolling in.” Included in this wardrobe would be your classic white button-down shirt (or perhaps a striped one that Oprah Winfrey has made famous), straight-leg jeans, caftans, and a lovely robe. If you’re interested in a wide array of suggested items to round out your coastal grandmother wardrobe, check out the recommendations listed here from In The Groove.
Perhaps what’s most encouraging about this fashion/lifestyle trend is that, as the Wall Street Journal says, it elevates “A rarely glorified segment of the population: older women.” In fact, the originator of this trend, Lex Nicoleta, said that she wanted to highlight the notion that getting older can be something to look forward to-the essential message being that you can get better with age. And why not embrace this message? If a shawl sweater, khaki pants, and a bucket hat make you feel comfortable and confident (and make others wish to emulate your lifestyle) then embrace your inner coastal grandma and get the wine glasses ready!
