Chew The Fat: High-Fat Dairy And Other Dietary Quandaries

For many, there’s nothing quite like the rich, creamy taste of premium ice cream or the melt-in-your-mouth goodness of a hot buttered roll. But while your tastebuds lust for these high-fat flavors, your heart may know something different. Despite suggestions that high-fat dairy is harmless to ingest, the reality is more muddled. High-fat dairy contains palmitic acid, a saturated fat that raises your LDL (bad) cholesterol numbers and thus increases your risk of heart disease. And while nutritionists recognize that a diet that completely denies you some occasional high-fat dairy may be too restrictive for many to sustain, the recommendations are to choose your dairy wisely- for example, opt for the whole milk yogurt rather than the cheese-slathered burger. And speaking of fats, a new study out of Japan confirms what you probably already know. Artificial trans fats, those oils that make fast-food fries so hard to resist, have now been found to increase your risk of dementia.
