A Man And A Plan: Healthy Aging Strategies For Men

While articles abound regarding women’s health and aging, it’s less common to see guidance for healthy aging in men. However, given sex differences in aging, it’s important that men (and the women who care for them!) understand specific concerns regarding aging in men. For an overview of health tips for men over 50 from the Cleveland Clinic, read here. And for some specific guidance concerning preventive health screenings, diagnostic tests and vaccinations every older man should have, take a look at these recommendations from Consumer Reports.
When it comes to heart health and aging, men have traditionally received cardiac exercise stress testing, usually on a treadmill, as an initial way to determine the presence of coronary artery disease. But that’s just one method for gauging cardiac functioning, and not always a useful one. New research has just come out with another possible way to get an initial read on men’s heart health. It turns out that the number of push-ups a man can do may be a good, reliable and inexpensive indicator of overall heart health. There’s a correlation between push- up capacity and aerobic capacity, which is usually a sign of cardiac health, though no guarantee. To find out more about this “push-up test”, hit the ground and read here. And for general info regarding cardiac health and men, who have a greater risk of heart attacks than women, take a look here.
