A Familiar Ring: The Latest Scams On Your Cell Phone
September 26, 2018
You know the score: your cell phone rings and it looks like a familiar number- or at least a local number. So you answer, assuming it must be someone you know. But more likely it’s a scammer trying to swindle you out of money. This trap is called “neighborhood spoofing” and it’s one of the latest scams that fraudsters are using to target innocent people. In fact, estimates are that by next year, ½ of the incoming calls on your cell phone will be fraudulent and most will be employing this spoofing trick. For more info on how to handle these “spoofs”, pull out your phone and click here. And an alternative trick used by criminals is the one ring call– the phone rings once, maybe twice, and then stops- and when you look to see who it was, you again may see a local number and assume you should call it back- but DON’T DO IT! Unless it’s a number you know or the caller leaves a message, it’s likely a scammer trying to entice you to call back. So unless you have money to throw away, best to resist the lure of the unknown caller.
